WHY TERMITE SEASON ISN’T OVER
Purchasing a home is said to be the biggest investment of your life. You wouldn’t just set a new phone on the ground under harsh, unprotected conditions outside, and you shouldn’t leave your home open to nature’s potential dangers either.
Even if you haven’t spotted any termites inside or around your home, that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook. Termites are incredibly stealth insects, unlike most pests which leave noticeable signs that they are there. The problem with these critters is that they can go unnoticed until there already is extensive damage done to your house.
Why You Might Not See Termites
As their name suggests, termites live underground. The vast majority of them prefer to remain underground where they belong.
Three primary groups of subterranean termites exist in this caste system: workers, soldiers, and reproductives (swarmers).
Workers build and repair nests, dig tunnels, and gather food for the colony.
Soldiers protect the colony from threats.
Reproductives are the only termites with wings and the ones you might see. They only come out above ground at certain times of the year.
These flying termites are swarmers and look very much like flying ants, which is why people commonly confuse them. They are colony's biggest termites, up to half an inch in length, dark brown to black, and have at least two pairs of equal-length wings.
Once they find a mate and a location to establish a new colony, these swarmers shed their wings.
What Damage Do Termites Cause?
Termites are sneaky, secretive house pests that can cause a lot of damage when they’re out of sight. Termites will always be the enemy of wood in your home; often they're drawn to the water-damaged wood first. These small creatures can gnaw at the floorings, walls and base of houses, leading to significant structural damage and leaving homeowners with expensive repair bills. Termites are responsible for an estimated 5 billion dollars worth of damage to homes annually. No one desires to have an termites infestation in their home, judging by the obvious level of harm these unwanted guests cause.
Signs You May Have Termites
As I said earlier, the first place you might see termites is sometimes when it’s too late! Reproductive termites typically leave the ground in the spring after rain, seeking mates, and begin founding new colonies. If you have spotted hundreds of these flying termites in your yard, it’s pretty obvious that you have an infestation on your hands!
While swarms primarily occur in spring, they can also occur at any time when it is warm and the temperature climbs above 70 degrees. So, you can see swarms in the summer, too. Cold winters won’t kill off termites, either, so don’t assume that a cold spell means your termite problem is no more.
How to Prevent Termites
The most effective strategy for dealing with termites is preventing them from entering your home in the first place. Termites are attracted to moisture-damaged wood so a dry home and property is essential.
Ensure that your home and yard have proper drainage.
Get water leaks inside and outside your home repaired immediately.
Clean your gutters regularly.
Store wood piles dry and at least 20 feet from your home.
Keep your yard clean from fallen trees, branches and leaves.
Check your foundation and outside walls regularly for cracks or holes and cover them as soon as you see any.
