MOSQUITOES HAVE HAD A HISTORICAL IMPACT

Mosquitoes: The Tiny Insects That Changed the Course of History

When most folks hear the word “mosquitoes,” they envision a buzzing pest that bites and leaves behind an itchy welt. You smack them away and keep moving forward. But what if these minuscule creatures are far mightier than we realise?

Yes, you read correctly: Mosquitoes have changed the course of wars, the fates of civilisations and shifts in international economies. Maybe now you realise “minor” is not so minor after all when it comes to mosquito pest control.

Did Mosquitoes Really Shape History?

Mosquitoes are more than a nuisance; they’re history changers. “The mosquito is the grim reaper, the harvester of human populations and the ultimate agent of historical change,” writes Winegard.

His work shows how diseases carried by mosquitoes, such as malaria and yellow fever, had huge consequences for world events.

Mosquitoes in Warfare and Tragedy

One sobering example from Winegard’s book is Nazi Germany. In WWII, it is suspected that the Nazis reflooded the Pontine Marshes in Italy to deliberately propagate malaria. It was an act of environmental vandalism that caused mass illness and is now regarded as a kind of biological warfare.

Even during the peak years of the slave trade, mosquito-borne disease had a tragic impact. While malaria and yellow fever ravaged people in Europe and the Americas, many in some parts of Africa had acquired some resistance. This also made African slaves more “suitable” in the minds of colonists, driving one of the darkest moments in human history all due, in part, to a mosquito’s bite.

So... Why Do Mosquitoes Even Exist?

It’s a fair question. In the natural world, mosquitoes actually do play a small role in pollination, and they are eaten by some birds and fish. But they’re nowhere near as useful as bees and the role they play in ecosystems is still the subject of dispute among scientists.

Some experts maintain that mosquitoes are a form of natural population control  and that theory supports what Winegard has found in their role in historical pandemics and conflicts.

What Attracts Mosquitoes in 2025?

Mosquito behaviour hasn’t changed much, but recent data shows increased mosquito activity due to climate change. Warmer temperatures and heavier rains create the perfect breeding conditions.

To avoid mosquito problems:

  • Eliminate standing water in buckets, pots, gutters, and birdbaths.

  • Keep your grass trimmed and remove thick vegetation.

  • Fix leaky outdoor faucets and ensure good drainage.

  • Use mosquito-safe landscaping with repellent plants like lavender, marigold, or basil.
